Collection of personal information

We may collect personal information about donors, volunteers and NVDA users. We collect personal information that you provide to us directly, as well as from third parties including PayPal, fundraising consultants and international NVDA community leaders.

At times, we may collect sensitive information such as health information (for example, when an NVDA user provides information about his or her blindness or vision impairment or any associated health issues). We only collect this information when you provide it voluntarily or consent to us collecting it.

Use and disclosure of personal information

We may use your personal information for the purposes of processing donations, issuing receipts, providing you with information about NVDA and any software updates, responding to your queries or comments, NVDA user research, donor research, reporting and to improve our software, our websites or our social media channels.

We may also use your personal information to ask for your donations, testimonials, feedback or other support.

If you do not wish to receive marketing communications from us, please contact us using the details provided above to be removed from our mailing list or via the “unsubscribe” information provided in any marketing communication.

Some of our work is carried out with the assistance of our service providers and volunteers and we may share personal information with these people if necessary for them to complete their tasks (for example, marketing and fundraising consultants). However, we will not sell or rent your personal information to third parties.

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, loss, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.

Credit card details and personal information provided to PayPal is governed by PayPal’s own privacy policy. For more information, go to http://www.paypal.com. Paypal shares with us your name, email and postal address, but it does not share your financial details with us. The information shared with us by PayPal is treated in accordance with this Privacy Statement.

If you don’t wish to make a financial contribution online, please refer to the information on the Donate page regarding alternative payment methods.

Although our websites link to external sites, including PayPal.com, sponsor websites and social media websites such as youtube.com, facebook.com, linkedin.com and twitter.com, NV Access Ltd is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of these or other external websites.

Please note that NVDA is open source software with many people around the world contributing to the project. Some people set up their own websites to support NVDA users in their part of the world and sometimes external sites even offer NVDA downloads. We are in no way responsible for the content or privacy practices of any of these websites.

However, NV Access does administer the site http://community.nvda-project.org/ in accordance with this Privacy Statement.

Website and email

When you visit our website, we may collect and store the date, time and duration of your visit, your web browser version, the pages accessed and the referring page. This information is not linked to your personal information. We may also collect other non-identifying data for statistical purposes. 

Our server may log your computer’s IP address, which we do not share with any third parties, and use only for statistical purposes.

If you choose to submit your personal information through a contact form or email, we may store and use that information (including your email address) according to this Privacy Statement.

Information you share publicly on social media may be re-published on our site; for example, through a Twitter widget.

If you choose to submit your personal information in a public domain such as a mailing list, online forum, blog, wiki pages, issue tracker or social media channels, NV Access may store some of this information, but we will only use it in accordance with this Privacy Statement. However, these are publicly available channels, so we are not responsible for ways in which other parties use the information you provide.

If you subscribe to one of our public community mailing lists related to development or support, your email address will be visible to other list members. In addition, any posts you make to the list, including your email address, will be archived on the web and accessible to the public. (There are web pages associated with each of the mailing lists.)

There is no personally identifying information gathered about NVDA users through the NVDA update check system. However, the system allows us to gather data about the version of NVDA you are using, your operating system version, the language being used and whether NVDA is installed. Your IP address is also gathered, but is kept separate from other data and is used only to derive your country. NV Access uses this information to provide you with updated versions of NVDA and to understand the usage patterns of NVDA users. We use this information to improve our products and services.

Non-identifying statistical information concerning usage of our products or our websites may be made available to the public.

While we take the best care possible to protect your personal information collected online, unfortunately it is not possible to guarantee the security of data transmitted over the internet. Therefore, we cannot warrant the security of any information you send to us or receive from us online, particularly through email. We are unable to protect that information until it reaches us. Once we receive your communication, we make best endeavours to keep your information secure.

Access to personal information

You can review your personal information collected by us to ensure that it is accurate and up to date. We may require proof of identity. Your request can be made in writing or via email to the address above.
